Our library

This week it was very exciting when we visited the library. The computer system was working which meant we could all get a library book issued to take home for the week. Our library times are on a Tuesday afternoon. The children can get one book out and they need to return it the following week in order to get a new one issued. If the children are reading a chapter book and haven't quite finished it, they can get it reissued for the following week. Kahikatea 2 were very excited to have Jenny and Ella's Mum Michelle helping us choose some great books.

Welcome to Week 5 in Kahikatea Hub

Notes and Reminders
It is hard to believe we are already at Week 5 of the term. Thank you all so much for sending in the gorgeous pictures of your child for our writing. The children have enjoyed discussing and sharing their photos and this week the children continue to use the photos to write their “Life Story.

Styx Mill Freshwater Frolicking
Thank you to all the people who have volunteered their help for this trip. K2 (Jane’s class) are still two adults short. Please come and see me if you can help - we go on the Thursday 8th March at 11:45. I would certainly appreciate this.

We hope your child enjoyed learning their spelling words last week. We have a new set this week and encourage the children to write the words out or in sentences as practise in their home fun books. Please remember to fill in the chart to show the progress over the week.

School Swimming
We will only be swimming on Wednesday and Thursday this week as the junior classes are making up their missed lessons from last week with the aquagym instructors.

We are slowly running out of tissues for the classroom. If you have a box to donate we would certainly appreciate it as we approach changes in weather and cooler starts to the day.

Swimming Sports Year 4-6 (optional for Year 4)
If your child has expressed an interest in the Swimming Sports at Jellie Park, please ensure their permission slip is returned this week. It would be great if you could take your child for a practise swim at Jellie Park to ease any nerves before the actual sports day on Monday 5th March.

Have a great week

Today we held our first hub assembly. K3 ran the assembly and they were fantastic. We celebrated our great learning and achievements with a number of certificates given out. Well done to the children who received one today.

Evie's fantastic Recount of our swimming experience at Aquagym last week

Aquagym February 2018

It was 11:00am and time to start our Aquagym adventure. We grabbed our swimming bags and walked out onto the bus. I sat next to Zena my best friend.
Then Otakāro 2 came onto the bus. We zoomed off at high speed racing toward the highway.
Once we had reached Aquagym,we got off the bus and walked into the building.
The first thing I heard was a cloud of noise. Adults, children, babies and teachers were all talking, VERY loudly!!! I covered my ears as we walked into the changing rooms.
Once I had changed into my togs and packed my bag I walked out of the changing rooms and up to my teacher. After she put my swimming cap on, she told me that I was swimming with the year 5’s and 6’s in the main pool instead of the little pool with the year 3’s and 4’s. Being a year 4, I was very proud.
I got into the main pool which was VERY, VERY cold. It was also VERY, VERY deep. Our swimming instructor told us to swim to the end of the pool, doing freestyle. So we did.

At Aquagym we learnt how to curl our toes while swimming which helps our speed and balance.
By then I was STARVING.
Luckily lunch was right after Aquagym. When we got out of the pool and changed into my school uniform we got bacl on the busand went back to school. ( very quickly). I felt proud, happy and exhausted. I did the same thing for a whole week.
I think Aqua gym is awesome and I can’t wait to go again next year.

Home Learning Week 4

Kahikatea Hub Home Learning
☺Term 1 Week 4 2018☺
Notes and Reminders

Well done! We all survived our first full week back at school. It was a fantastic week of swimming at AquaGym last week. The children certainly learnt a lot working with the experienced instructors who really focused on the specific skills for their age and stage. All of the children showed great progress and increased confidence in the water.

This week the children start the spelling component of our home learning sheet. They children have written in either 5 or 10 words to learn this week. The words are specific to their group and are the result of our testing last week on their knowledge of the essential spelling lists 1-6. There is still some testing for a few children being completed this week. For those children, we have given you list 7 to complete the testing at home during the next week.  Thank you for your help with this.
School Swimming

We will not be able to have school swimming this week apart from Thursday as the Junior school are having their Aquagym lessons on site here at school.

It was great last week on Tuesday afternoon to visit
our new library space. The children enjoyed exploring the library, looking for new books and finding a wee nook to tuck away and just read with a friend or by themselves. Thank you also to  those lovely parents who could pop down and assist their homebase classroom to explore the library and listen to children read. We are looking forward to when we are able to take books home for the week.

Writing: Photos- For the Children’s Autobiographies
Just a reminder to keep those photos of your
child/children  coming in (at varying ages)  for writing this week. We are happy to print them off at school, so just flick them through on an email.

Have a great week
